Brackla dominate Old Tyleryan in season opener

Brackla RFC kicked off their East Central 3C Campaign in emphatic fashion with a multiple try victory over Old Tyleryan. The Maggies, coming off the back of a promising pre-season, entered this opening day fixture looking to cement their promotion intentions from the get-go – they definitely delivered.

Brackla started the game well with some early runs from Lock Roger Owens testing the opposition pack. It didn’t take long for the backs to get ball in hand, Jamie Lorimer and Lewis Salter showed their quality with ball in hand breaking many tackles through strength and side-steps. It was this combination that set the bar high as the pair combined for 6 tries in the first half. Lorimer crossed the line once while Salter continued his high try-scoring habit from last season, his personal tally came to 5 tries in the first half. The game wasn’t as one-sided as the score-line suggests. Old Tyleryan possessed some quality talent in their forwards division and some tactical kicking from the opposition fly-half tested Brackla’s aerial ability. The Maggies defence was tested at the close of the first half as Old Tyleryan’s forwards battered the Brackla try line – after a 5-minute period camped in their own 22, Brackla forced the turnover as they won the forwards battle on this occasion.

Half Time: Brackla 43 – 3 Old Tyleryan

The second half proved to be much of the same. A solid contest between both sets of forwards but the moment Brackla’s backs got ball in hand, it was pretty much game over. Another 6 tries followed with Ken Morris, Scott Narbeth, Andrew West, Evan Stanton, Roger Owens and Jamie Evans all crossing the try line. Jayce Evans had a brilliant day at the kicking tee bringing his points tally for the day to 21. All in all, a fantastically well-rounded performance from the men in black. While the backline stole the score-line with fantastic pace and finishing, the forwards had an outstanding game against a tricky opposition pack. Captain David Paul led the line-out without any errors and some brilliant jackals from forwards Burke and Bennetta eventually won the forwards battle.

Brackla look to continue their winning ways next weekend when they travel to Tredegar RFC.
