Brackla go top with a 12 try win in Tredegar

Brackla continued their dominant form in East Central 3C as they ran riot against Tredegar. For the second game in succession, Brackla hit double digits when it came to tries scored. The Maggies crossed the try-line 12 times in total as they ended up with a 78-0 victory at The Recreation Ground.

The opening 5 minutes were uneventful as both teams looked to find their rhythm. A few unforced handling errors from both teams notched up the scrum count with Brackla subsequently showing their dominance in scrummaging. The front row combination of Evan Stanton, Dale Thomas and Liam Burke proved a successful choice as they pushed Tredegar back every opportunity. The men in black didn’t take long to turn these scrums into points – Robert Davies opened the scoring from the back of a scrum as the pack overpowered Tredegar on their 5-meter line. Tredegar looked to strike back as they showed great skill with ball in hand, some lovely off-loading saw the men from Gwent creep up the pitch. This tactic was eventually stomped out by the Brackla defence – particularly by Flanker Cory Thomas whose strength over the ball brought his total jackal tally to 5 for the day. More first half tries from Martin Lorimer, Lewis Salter and a second from Robert Davies brought Brackla a first half bonus point as The Maggies ended the half with a strong lead.

Half Time: Tredegar RFC 0 – 24 Brackla RFC

Credit must be given to Tredegar. They had struggled for numbers and managed to put together a team to honour the weekend fixture. While their players possessed individual skill, this was the first time that the majority of their team had played together. Tredegar’s on-pitch chemistry will surely come together as the season goes on… but Brackla exploited the team’s inexperience and lack of depth off the bench during the second half. Injuries to Tredegar’s front row meant the scrum went uncontested in the second half, this allowed Brackla’s backs to pull off their tried and tested set-piece moves. Lewis Salter, Jayce Evans and Jamie Lorimer linked up to break through the Tredegar defence on several occasions; they out-passed, sided-stepped and powered through the opposition’s backline to bring the try count into double digits. Jamie Lorimer bagged himself a second half hat-trick… you heard it here first! Roger Owens and Harry Wragg also got themselves onto the score sheet as a tired Tredegar crumbled in the final minutes of the game. All in all, a brilliant performance from Brackla as The Maggies go top of the East Central 3C league.
